About Altai State Nature Biosphere Reserve

Founded in 1932, the Altai State Nature Biosphere Reserve encompasses over 1.5 million acres of rugged terrain in the Altai Mountains of southwestern Siberia. The reserve's geography is characterized by soaring mountain peaks reaching over 3,500 meters, extensive alpine meadows, dense coniferous forests, and pristine river valleys. This diverse terrain creates a variety of habitats supporting a rich mix of flora and fauna, including Siberian pine, cedar, and larch forests, alpine tundra, and unique steppe ecosystems. The reserve serves as an important refuge for endangered wildlife such as the snow leopard, Altai argali (wild sheep), Siberian ibex, and the elusive sable. Its rivers and streams are habitats for rare fish species, while migratory birds find critical nesting grounds here. Though primarily a scientific and conservation-focused area, the reserve offers limited ecotourism opportunities, including guided hikes, wildlife observation, and winter snowshoeing. Visitors may admire notable landmarks such as the Belukha Mountain—the highest peak in Siberia—and the Katun River canyon. The reserve is globally significant as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves and the Golden Mountains of Altai World Heritage Site. Its remote location and strict access controls preserve its wilderness character, appealing to adventurous travelers and researchers drawn to its pristine landscapes and ecological importance.
